8" UV Filter Set (Ultra Violet Sterilizer Filter)

Product details

In water purification, a UV (Ultraviolet) filter is a stage that uses a specialized lamp to neutralize microorganisms. Unlike other filters that physically trap particles, the UV stage uses light to disinfect the water.

Key Components

  • UV Lamp: The source of the germicidal ultraviolet light.

  • Quartz Sleeve: A clear tube that protects the lamp from water while allowing the UV rays to pass through efficiently.

  • UV Chamber (Reactor): The stainless steel housing where the water flow is exposed to the light.

  • Ballast/Controller: The power supply that regulates the voltage for the lamp and often includes an alarm to signal if the bulb has burnt out.

Important Considerations

  1. Pre-filtration is Essential: UV light can only kill what it can "see." If the water is cloudy (high turbidity) or contains physical sediment, microorganisms can "hide" behind these particles and survive. This is why UV is almost always placed after sediment and carbon filters.

  2. Water Hardness: Scale buildup on the quartz sleeve can block the light. Regular maintenance is required to ensure the sleeve remains clean.

  3. No Residual Effect: UV only kills microbes at the point of contact. If the water is re-contaminated in a storage tank after the UV stage, it will not be protected.

  4. Lamp Life: UV lamps typically lose their effectiveness after about 9,000 hours (roughly one year) of continuous use and should be replaced even if they still appear to be glowing.
